GEMS World Academy Etoy-inaugurated its new facilities on 28th May in the presence of Olympic and young athletes during an evening dedicated to “Sport in Action”. Swimming, basketball, dancing, netball, badminton, or fitness demonstrations enabled athletes and students to show the entire range of disciplines available on site.
GEMS World Academy’s display in honour of sport was truly impressive. Red carpet, live music and the presence of personalities delighted the guests. The event was marked in particular by the vibrant speech of Jean-Christophe Rolland, president of the International Rowing Federation (FISA) and Olympic medallist. He shared his experiences with the audience, how he won the gold in Sydney, recalling the importance of determination in pursuing his athletic goals and – more generally – in everyday life.
For the first time, the centre facilities were showcased at full capacity, giving the site a festival atmosphere. Many events, in which some students and parents were actively involved, were held simultaneously. Many sports demonstrations took place, including a swimming demonstration led by Adrien Perez – former Olympian and holder of the Swiss record of the 50m butterfly short course (25m) – and the Rolle Swimming team; a synchronised swimming show by Pamela Fischer – worldwide swimmer and former Olympian – and her team; a basketball demonstration with Milos Bozovic – BBC Lausanne (League B) player – and the DEL Team.
With its 25-meter long swimming pool, a large multi-sport court, a climbing wall, a fitness room and a dance studio, the new centre was designed by the office Architects Architecture and Design Lausanne CCHE SA. These facilities will not only benefit students at the school, but can also be rented by organisations and local societies. “We are delighted to offer such state-of-the-art facilities to our students and the entire region.” Said Audrey Peverelli, Director and CEO of the School.
This venue had already been presented to the authorities at the beginning of May, as part of the Vaud government traditional “school run” last May 4th (visite du conseil d’Etat). Alongside the state council Philippe Leuba (Economy and Sports) and National Council Isabelle Moret, Michel Roulet, the mayor of Etoy, noted how rapidly the construction was made and welcomed the relentless commitment of the private institution to integrate the entire region and collaborate with the surrounding public institutions.
