What makes us all survive winters in northern climes is, no doubt, the prospect of being able to spend a few days and evenings out of doors in the summer. The livin’ may be easy in summertime, but it can be a little easier yet with some proper furniture.
It seems that in any truly great film there is a key scene that takes place on a patio or veranda of some sort. Take, for instance, The Philadelphia Story, in which a slightly inebriated Jimmy Stewart pushes Katharine Hepburn around in a chaise lounge chair on wheels – which leaves us longing for a sophisticated life like that in a 1940s film. Switzerland in the summertime could easily be the backdrop for such a film. It almost begs its inhabitants to host nightly outdoor cocktail parties – looking out onto one of the many lakes from a tastefully furnished terrace. The Pfister outdoor furniture collection has taken its cue from Hollywood sophistication, allowing its consumers to become modern-day Katharine Hepburns and Jimmy Stewarts.
This summer will see the birth of two Atelier Pfister novelties, the Belfaux and Nods collections. The Belfaux collection, ideal for dressing up a pool or lounge area, features white sculptures with curves and squiggles for potted plants. The line comes in different heights and diameters and, though certainly a conversation piece, would never dare upstage the true star of the ensemble – the plant itself. And the Nods line features classic wooden table and chair sets with accents of canvas – a somewhat nautical element – in some of its pieces. Its foldable chairs, uncannily similar to a film director’s chair, are understated and functional – allowing a patio used for dining to be quickly transformed into a spacious dance floor. Divided into other categories typical to the Hollywood scene, such as “film noir & blanc” and the cocktail hour line, the furniture can turn any home into a Hollywood set.
It is easy to overlook the importance of an outdoor space in the summertime, but Pfister came out of winter hibernation before the rest of us to prepare us for the cocktail parties and afternoons spent by the pool. Summer is a very social season and should be lived like the film stars – so pop champagne, don your best suit or dress, and mingle amongst your closest friends on an impeccably furnished patio. You may not be an Oscar winner, but hosting a soiree with the scene set by Pfister will certainly be an award-worthy performance.
